Lost a Tooth? An Emergency Dentist in Clearwater, FL, Can Help
A permanent tooth that is knocked out or otherwise dislodged is a dental emergency. Why is it important to act fast? With prompt action, a dentist may be able to reinsert the lost tooth in its socket and save it. Even though the tooth’s root and the surrounding nerves, blood vessels, and supporting tissues have been damaged, the bone may reattach to the root if the tooth is re-implanted properly. Additionally, if left untreated, an infection may develop in the empty socket.
If you’ve lost a tooth, call Florida Dental Centers right away. Our team of compassionate dental professionals is available in Clearwater, Florida, to provide the prompt treatment you need.
How to Handle Your Lost Tooth
Until you can see a dentist, here’s what to do:
- Carefully pick up the tooth – Hold it by its crown (the strong, white chewing surface that is normally exposed above your gum line). Don’t touch the root, which has sensitive fibers that are easily damaged.
- Lightly rinse the tooth with water – Don’t scrub it, wipe it dry, or wrap it.
- Gently slip the tooth back into its socket – If the tooth is positioned correctly, it should easily slide back into place in your mouth. If it doesn’t, don’t force it; instead, place it in a cup of milk (not water) and take it with you to the dentist’s office.
- Apply light pressure – Gently bite down on a clean handkerchief or wet gauze to hold the tooth firmly in place (if you were able to reinsert it) and help stop any bleeding.
If you cannot locate the lost tooth, you should still see a dentist as soon as possible.
What Will Your Dentist Do?
First, your dentist will carefully clean the empty tooth socket to remove any debris so he or she can better assess the injury. Next, your dentist may gently reposition the lost tooth in its socket, then splint the tooth to the surrounding teeth using soft wire or composite material. You may also need a root canal to repair an adult tooth that was knocked out.
